Large Corporations Large corporations offer many advantages to their employees. You can expect greater job security and flexibility than you might have in other situations. Large companies need personnel who can do a wide range of things for them. That means you should have room to advance within the company, and should be able to change jobs (or even careers) without looking for a new employer. Likewise, you may be able to transfer to another city or country while staying with the same firm. Large companies are also able to be more generous with pay and benefits (including things like health insurance, childcare, and tuition reimbursement) than other employers can be. Staff size means that corporations are often sociable places, too. You might find yourself with the number of colleagues needed to field not just a company softball team but an entire softball league. The disadvantages of working for a large employer also stem from their size. Some people complain of feeling lost in large companies, and stifled by bureaucracy, organizational structure, and office politics. Other downsides include the risk of being 'typecast' in an unrewarding role or function, and of hitting a ceiling in your career progression. Strange as it may seem, the hundreds of people working for a large company don't necessarily add up to a warm atmosphere. It's no accident that corporate offices are often lampooned as cold and psychologically stressful places. Back to types of employers home page. |
