Computers do a lot of different things – and so do information technology specialists. IT specialists design, develop, support, and fix computers and the software that runs on them. They work in all sectors of the economy, from business to government to the military to educational institutions, and at all levels – from one-person consulting firms to project teams employing hundreds of people. IT employment is expected to grow above the rate of the rest of the economy for at least the next decade. An IT career usually requires at 4 years of college-level education. Computer science, applied mathematics, informatics, electrical engineering, technical communication, and business information systems are some of the academic programs that can prepare you for an IT career.
